What You Need
- At least 4 players (works best with 6 to 10)
- A phone or device to access the Imposter Game Generator
- Optional: slips of paper and a pencil if you prefer the analog version
Setup
- Choose your settings. Open the Imposter Game Generator and select the number of players, word categories, and difficulty level. You can pick multiple categories to keep things interesting.
- Start the game. Press the Start button. The generator will randomly select one player as the imposter and assign a secret word to everyone else.
- Pass the device around. Each player takes a turn looking at the screen privately. The screen will show either the secret word or "IMPOSTER" depending on their role. Tap "Hide Word and Pass" to move to the next player.
- Begin the clue round. Once all players have seen their word, the game begins.
Gameplay
Giving Clues
Players take turns giving a single word as a clue about the secret word. Clues must follow these rules:
- ✓Each player gives exactly one word per turn
- ✓Clues must relate to the secret word but cannot be the word itself
- ✓Clues should not be too obvious (the imposter is listening)
- ✓No spelling out letters or using the word in another language
For the Imposter
The imposter does not know the secret word. Their goal is to:
- Listen carefully to other players' clues to figure out what the word might be
- Give a believable clue without knowing the actual word
- Avoid acting suspicious or drawing attention
Discussion and Voting
After 2 to 3 rounds of clues, players discuss who they think the imposter is. Each player explains their reasoning and then votes by pointing at or naming their suspect. The player with the most votes is revealed as either the imposter or an innocent player.
Scoring
If the Group Catches the Imposter
Every player except the imposter earns 1 point. The group wins the round through teamwork and deduction.
If the Imposter Survives
The imposter earns 1 point for avoiding detection. If the imposter can also correctly guess the secret word, they earn a bonus point (2 points total for the round).
Game Variations
Two-Word Clues
Instead of single-word clues, allow players to use two words. This makes the game easier for younger players and gives the imposter more information to work with.
Multiple Imposters
With 7 or more players, try having 2 imposters. The imposters do not know who each other are and must figure that out during the game. The group wins only if they identify both imposters.
No Repeating Clues
Once a word has been used as a clue, it cannot be repeated by anyone else. This forces players to think more creatively and makes it harder for the imposter to copy others.
Category Hint Mode
Turn on Category Hint in the game settings to show everyone the word category at the start. This helps narrow things down and gives the imposter a fighting chance.
Speed Round
Set a 5-second timer for each player to give their clue. If they hesitate too long, they lose their turn. This adds pressure and can lead to revealing mistakes.
Strategy Tips
For Regular Players
- Give clues that are specific enough to confirm to others that you know the word, but vague enough to keep the imposter guessing
- Watch for players who hesitate, give vague clues, or copy other players' ideas
- Do not make your clue too obvious in the first round. Save stronger clues for later rounds
For the Imposter
- Listen to the first few clues carefully. They often give away the general theme
- Give abstract or broad clues that could apply to many things
- Mimic the confidence and style of other players. Do not overthink or hesitate
